An update on the EU’s accession to the ECHR

Prof. Tobias Lock

Tobias Lock is a Professor of Law at Maynooth University School of Law and Criminology and founding director of the Maynooth Centre for European Law. From 2020-2023 he held a Jean Monnet Chair in EU Law and Fundamental Rights there. Originally from Germany, where obtained most of his legal qualifications, Prof. Lock joined Maynooth from the University of Edinburgh, where he was a senior lecturer in EU law and co-director of the Europa Institute. His research focuses on EU constitutional and fundamental rights law as well as the relationship between EU law, domestic law, and international law (which includes EU-ECHR relations and the law of Brexit). 


He is on the board of the Irish Centre for European Law and currently serves as an EU law adviser to the Scottish Parliament’s Constitution, Europe, External Affairs and Culture Committee. He is also a member of the Royal Irish Academy’s ARINS project (Analysing and Researching Ireland North and South). His research currently focuses on EU fundamental rights law (on which he is preparing a new book); EU accession to the ECHR; and the fallout from Brexit, in particular its effects on the devolved parts of the UK.
